High Internet access brings vulnerability

The quest to increase the level of broadband access in South Africa is bound to be coupled with a serious increase in the incidences of both cyber-crime and computer viruses. International trends show that the more broadband access a country has, the more criminals and hackers are able to exploit computing power and con or inconvenience users. The link is now affecting China, and will inevitably hit South Africa too, says Richard Archdeacon, a director at computer security company Symantec. "High-speed, always-on internet access means computers are open to attack 24 hours a day, yet, in their eagerness to get that broadband access, companies tend to forget to think about security until later," says Archdeacon. Symantec’s latest study of cyber-crime found that China experienced a 37% increase in the number of computers infected, while the UK has also suffered an increase in online crime. The study found that 22 000 new computer bugs were written last year, up 50% on the previous year. Past attacks were designed to destroy data or to cause widespread damage and win notoriety for the perpetrator. Nowadays, most attacks are designed to steal data for profit, without alerting the user. Of the 50 most common malicious codes, 80% are able to steal confidential information. Hackers are taking an increasingly businesslike approach, targeting certain types of industry or companies, or even particular geographical areas. Others specialise in detecting software vulnerabilities through which access can be gained to a system, and those details are sold to the criminal fraternity.
