Electricity Price Hikes Affect Small Business in a Big Way

Bizassist.co.za clients and readers, alike, are likely to suffer further consequences of Eskom’s mismanagement as Nersa sanctions a further 25% price hike.

“ The price hikes are the consequence of years of mismanagement at Eskom (confirmed by the Moroga debacle). The greatest cost of the increase is to be borne by middle-income families and small and medium –sized enterprises, while the big corporates and mining houses get let off with a much better deal. This is unfair and discriminatory.

Business owners, with their innovative streak must be looking at other ways to source or generate electricity. There will be increasing interest in small-scale renewable and solar systems many of which are looking like promising investments.

The price hike will cause a decrease in carbon dioxide greenhouse gas emissions, which is one green lining in the clouds. There is a much larger set of business opportunities coming up fast over the horizon however. For entrepreneurs, these are in the clean tech low-carbon economy and businesses should start now to find out more about how to get in on the ground floor of the cleaner, greener, low-carbon economy.”

- Hugh Tyrrell, director of GreenEdge a Cape-based specialist green business management and marketing consultancy.

In addition to a degree in sociology, GreenEdge founder, Hugh Tyrrell combines a dozen years in marketing with over 15 years of experience in environmental communications consulting. He was also the founding editor of two national environmental magazines.
